UAE mother launches new picture book on how families cope when a parent comes home changed

A UAE-based mother has released a new children’s picture book aimed at helping families talk about the moments that change home life, without forcing children to name what happened.

The Light Never Left, written by Rucha Daryani, founder of The Second Act, follows Ari, a young girl whose mother returns from hospital changed. The book’s central theme is how children notice changes, questions can go unasked, and adults may struggle to find words for something they are also frightened of.

According to the press release, the story does not name the cause of the change. It describes that family circumstances can vary, whether the shift comes from a diagnosis, a parent’s depression, separation, or loss, but that “the way it lands on a family is remarkably similar.” By leaving the event unnamed, the book is intended to be recognizable to families living through their own version of difficult change.

A focus on the uncertain middle

The publisher says the book avoids moving quickly toward a neat happy ending. Instead, it gives attention to the “long, uncertain middle” when improvement is not guaranteed and no one can promise when things will feel better. The press release describes the ending as “honest,” with light returning, though not as brightly as before.

In the story’s final pages, the “light” shifts from something only Ari’s mother has to a broader family role, including help from her younger brother Theo, quiet strength from her father, and Ari’s own drawings. The press release also highlights a simple practice families can take from the ending.

Daily prompt for families

The book introduces a question, described as “Where was the light today?”, which the press release says families can ask at dinner or bedtime. The answers, it adds, are not meant to be judged or ranked and can be small, such as someone making toast or someone laughing.

The release also states that the prompt can be used in school settings as a short, five-minute circle activity with no materials or preparation.

Connected to The Second Act

In the announcement, Daryani’s writing is presented as an extension of The Second Act, a community initiative supporting women through major life transitions in the UAE, including illness, motherhood, burnout, divorce, and career disruption. The press release says The Second Act emphasizes rebuilding forward rather than “bouncing back,” offering non-clinical support at a woman’s own pace.

Uhibbook Publishing is listed as the publisher of The Light Never Left. The press release states the book is available to shop now for AED 65 via uhibbook.com.

The announcement was published on October 2026. Daryani is described in the release as a keynote speaker and media contributor who speaks about identity loss and hidden disability, and works with schools and organizations across the UAE and wider region.
