Community races and a NextGen Tri youth event announced for World Triathlon Multisport Championships Abu Dhabi 2026

Abu Dhabi’s upcoming World Triathlon Multisport Championships will include community events alongside the competition, with organisers saying the experience will be open to residents and visitors of different ages and abilities.

In a programme announced for 21 November, the event will feature community running and a youth-focused triathlon activity on Hudayriyat Island during the championships period. The World Triathlon Multisport Championships Abu Dhabi 2026, powered by TAQA, will take place from 13 to 22 November and is scheduled to bring together more than 4,000 athletes from around the world, organisers said, competing for world titles across six multisport disciplines.

Community running on the championship course

Organisers said the community running programme will include 1km and 3km untimed fun runs intended for families, friends and first-time participants, as well as timed 5km and 10km events for those seeking personal bests. The community races are designed to let participants experience the atmosphere of an international championship, organisers said, including crossing the same finish line as athletes on the world stage.

Hudayriyat NextGen Tri for ages 4 to 16

A new youth triathlon event, the Hudayriyat NextGen Tri, will introduce young athletes aged 4 to 16 to swimming, cycling and running in a championship setting. Organisers said the activity will be structured into six categories with age-appropriate distances, and will also include a Junior Relay for teams of two or three.

The programme is hosted by Modon and delivered in collaboration with the Abu Dhabi Sports Council, according to the announcement.

First World Championship staging in the Middle East, plus sustainability push

The championships, organisers said, mark the first time the event has been staged in the Middle East. They added that the championships host, Modon, is targeting Gold standard under the World Triathlon Sustainable Event Certification for the first time, with multiple sustainability initiatives included across the event.

Among the initiatives mentioned is a beach clean-up on Hudayriyat Island as part of the wider sustainability programme.

Registration required, with event app launch

Organisers said participation in the community events will be open to the public, but advanced registration is required because places are limited.

They also announced that the official World Triathlon Multisport Championships Abu Dhabi 2026 app will launch this week, providing athlete tracking and key event information for athletes, supporters, visitors and spectators.

Registrations for the 1km, 3km, 5km and 10km running events, as well as the Hudayriyat NextGen Tri, are described in the announcement as currently open.

Statements from Abu Dhabi Sports Council and Modon

His Excellency Aref Al Awani, General Secretary of the Abu Dhabi Sports Council, said the value of hosting major international events includes their impact beyond elite competition, and that collaboration with Modon aims to strengthen grassroots participation through the championships’ global stage.

Bill O’Regan, Group CEO at Modon, said community and sustainability are described as key pillars for how the company approaches major events, adding that the community runs and Hudayriyat NextGen Tri are intended to let people experience a global sporting event and create an activity that extends beyond elite competition.
