Tashkeel to launch illustrated book celebrating UAE biodiversity at Dubai Design Week

Tashkeel has announced the launch of Biodiversity Across the UAE, an illustrated colouring book created to highlight the United Arab Emirates natural world beyond its skyline and urban landscape.

According to the publisher, the book is “commissioned by” Tasmeem Tashkeel and “illustrated by” Lateefa bint Maktoum, Tashkeel’s founder and director. The release states that the publication is designed for both adults and children, with black-and-white illustrations accompanied by common and scientific names.

The organisers say the project invites readers to explore biodiversity through observation and independent research. The book, the announcement adds, aims to go beyond providing images to colour by encouraging readers to connect what they see on the pages with species and habitats encountered in everyday life.

Birds, desert plants and marine ecosystems

In its description of the content, Tashkeel says the book covers a range of environments across the UAE, including desert regions and indigenous plant life, insects, mountain and dune ecosystems, and marine habitats along the country’s shores. It also mentions migratory birds and mangrove forests, alongside native flowering plants and examples of wildlife adaptations.

The release says the illustrations are paired with scientific identifiers so that readers can investigate colours, characteristics and habitats themselves. Tashkeel also characterises the colouring activity as an interactive way to encourage curiosity, exploration and learning.

Artist quote and personal motivation

Lateefa bint Maktoum is quoted in the release describing the book as personal and rooted in her relationship with UAE landscapes. She said the work is “my love letter to the UAE,” adding that she wanted to encourage readers to look closer at “the extraordinary life that surrounds us.”

The release further attributes to her the view that while the UAE is widely known for development and architecture, “there is another world here” that has long been part of the country’s identity. She also said the book aims to inspire curiosity and questions, with an emphasis on recognising life around people to build connection and responsibility toward protecting it.

A “first” illustrated colouring format, presented as an introduction

Tashkeel’s announcement positions Biodiversity Across the UAE as the first illustrated colouring publication of its kind in the UAE that brings together a broad exploration of the country’s biodiversity for both adults and children. The organisers say the book is intended as an artistic introduction rather than a definitive scientific reference, and that species are identified to support independent research and closer observation.

The release also describes the publication as a family-oriented activity that can help visitors and residents discover a less familiar side of the Emirates and reconnect with natural heritage.

Launch details

In the announcement, Tashkeel says Biodiversity Across the UAE will officially launch on 7 November 2026 at the Marketplace during Dubai Design Week. The book will be available through the Tashkeel Shop, the release adds, with options for in-store purchase at Tashkeel in Nad Al Sheba 1, Dubai, as well as online.
